Tech: Scheduling Defrag and Disk Cleanup in XP

Often times simply running defrag and/or disk cleanup on your Windows machine will bring back some performance on your machine. You can run defrag and disk cleanup manually by following these steps:

Open My Computer
Right-click on the C: drive ( or any other hard drive you want )
Select Properties
Click Disk Cleanup in the General tab to run the Disk Cleanup tool.
Click on the Tools tab and click Defragment Now... to defrag your hard drive

To schedule these tasks to run automatically follow these steps from Microsoft:

Disk Cleanup:

1. Click Run from the Start Menu.
2. In the Open box, type cleanmgr /sageset:1
3. Click OK.

Disk Cleanup opens with a list of the possible files to be deleted. Select a file type to display a description. Check the boxes for the files you want removed, and click OK.
Next, you can schedule Disk Cleanup to run when you want it to.

1. Click Control Panel, then click System and Maintenance, and then click Scheduled Tasks.
2. Double–click Add Scheduled Task to start the Scheduled Task Wizard. In the list of applications you want Windows to run, click Disk Cleanup, and then click Next.
3. Select a frequency for the task—weekly is good—and click Next.
4. Select a day of the week and time for the task to run.
5. Enter the name and password of a user. The program will be run as if that user started it. Check the box to open Advanced Settings when you're done.
6. In the Run box, add the following to the end of the path: /sagerun: 1 and then click OK.

Defragment:

Goto Control Panel > Add Scheduled Tasks
Follow the prompts until you get to Browse for the defrag program
Navigate to windows\system32\defrag.exe and click Open

Set your desired schedule and add the drive letter so the the program field looks like:
C:\windows\system32\defrag.exe c:
