Opinions: New Color iPod Nano
So we have new iPod Nanos in aluminum and in color now. It's great that Apple's solved the scratching issue, and the aluminum casing makes the Nano seem much less fragile. However, why do we have to use these UGLY ass colors? The blue is this pasty blue, green is an annoying lime green, and the pink reminds me of Beptol Bismo...Why can't we have a deep rich blue like a Dodge Viper, or a beautiful Ferrari Red? It's nice to have different colored iPods, but I think Apple can do much better in the color selection.

Opinions: iPod Challengers
When I was in Taiwan last year I saw many very cool and innovative mp3 players. iRiver and Samsung both had many amazing products. Players had OLED displays, FM radio, and some even had recording features built in. The players also came in all kinds of shapes and sizes. Back then I was wondering why Apple's iPod seemed to be lagging in the 'innovation' compared to these products. And then Apple released the Nano, proving that it still had great vision on design and innovation. The Nano really was an amazing and beautiful little machine. But as the year went along more and more new devices came on the market. Here's a sampling of some very nice MP3 players:
Samsung YP-K5
iRiver S10
Arko
Signeo SN-A250
After comparing these to the new iPod announcements this week, Apple's iPod efforts suddenly doesn't seem too innovative anymore. Even the new iPod Shuffle as amazing as it is just doesn't seem too appealing when compared to the new iRiver S10. It's good that Apple has done an amazing job of creating an iPod + iTunes ecosystem, otherwise I think iPod sales would be in jeopardy.
Apple better have something insanely great up it's sleeve, because the iPod is seriously lagging in design and innovation. As great as iTunes and iPod is, there is a lot of competition in both the online download service and the portable media player market. Let's hope Apple can bring back some 'WOW' into the iPod line.

Opinions: Crappy MacBook Speakers
I love my MacBook. I've had it for a couple months now, and have gotten over the initial size increase from my aging 12-inch PowerBook. Heat problems seemed to be a little more tolerable too after the latest firmware update, though the MacBook still runs pretty hot. BootCamp 1.1 also made running Windows on the MacBook a little easier. The built-in iSight camera now works, and there is also support for creating custom partitions for other operating systems using BootCamp 1.1.However, there still one thing I'm quite annoyed by. Why does the MacBook have such a crappy speaker? Even a two year old Dell Inspiron has a louder speaker, a MUCH louder speaker. Many times I can barely hear anything from the MacBook unless I'm in a quiet room by myself. Annoying... how expensive can two speakers be? Argh...

Article: Linux ( & Mac ) Unfriendly Viruses
Here's an old article from NewsForge.com from Jan. 2005, but I think it is still quite relevant and telling. Recently CrossOver Mac Beta was released for Intel based Macs. But unfortunately CrossOver Mac ( WINE ) is quite 'inadequate' as it can not run the various very popular worms and viruses on Windows. The article refers to Linux but now applies just as well to Mac OS X:Linux just isn't user-friendly when it comes to viruses. You have to work to find and run them. It doesn't happen automatically as it does with Windows. The GNU/Linux folks really should improve this glaring discrepancy.
Apprantly WINE FAILED miserably in running MyDoom, Sobig, and several other popular worms... ;)
