Gadgets: Ginormous storage in Tiny space
From Gizmodo, Western Digital released a laptop 2.5" hard drive today with a whopping 320 GB! Drives are pretty reliable these days, but this just seems a little scary to me... imagine 300 GB of your family photos disappearing due to a hardware failure... ( see last article ).

Retrodata, a data recovery service firm in the UK, says that the Seagate drives with firmware version 7.01 in (some) MacBooks are faulty and could cause irreversible damage to the hard drive. In other words, back up your data regularly!!!Labels: damage, hard drive, hd, macbook, seagate

Tech: Adobe PDF vulnerability
There's a big scare about Adobe's PDF vulnerability lately. Adobe released patches to it's 8.x series Acrobat software and will release a patch for the 7.x series later. If for some reason you can't get the latest patched Acrobat software you can follow these steps to manually black the exploit ( from Adobe ):
Disclaimer: This procedure involves editing the registry. Adobe doesn't provide support for editing the registry, which contains critical system and application information. Make sure to back up the registry before modifying it. For more information about the registry, refer to Windows Help.
Exit Adobe Reader or Acrobat.
Open RegEdit. On Windows, go to Start > Run, type in regedit and click OK.
Choose File > Export.
Select Local Disk C for the Save in: location.
Type backup for File Name.
Choose All for the Export Range.
Click Save.
Navigate to the appropriate registry key:
NOTE: When editing the key values for Adobe Reader and Acrobat 7.0.9, Regedit will launch a Edit Binary Value window. Be sure to edit the values below using the right panel of the window.
Acrobat:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\7.0\FeatureLockDown\cDefaultLaunchURLPerms
Reader:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\7.0\FeatureLockDown\cDefaultLaunchURLPerms
If tSchemePerms is set as follows:
version:1|shell:3|hcp:3|ms-help:3|ms-its:3|ms-
itss:3|its:3|mk:3|mhtml:3|help:3|disk:3|afp:3|disks:3|telnet:3|ssh:3|acrobat:2|mailto:2|file:2
To Disable mailto (recommended)
Modify tSchemePerms by setting the mailto: value to 3:
version:1|shell:3|hcp:3|ms-help:3|ms-its:3|ms-
itss:3|its:3|mk:3|mhtml:3|help:3|disk:3|afp:3|disks:3|telnet:3|ssh:3|acrobat:2|mailto:3|file:2
To set mailto to prompt
Modify tSchemePerms by removing the mailto: value:
version:1|shell:3|hcp:3|ms-help:3|ms-its:3|ms-
itss:3|its:3|mk:3|mhtml:3|help:3|disk:3|afp:3|disks:3|telnet:3|ssh:3|acrobat:2|file:2
Close RegEdit.
Restart the application.
Alternatively, it may be sufficient to use a third party PDF reader. I'd suggest Foxit Pro; it's fast, light-weight, and free :)

Tech: Leopard Time Machine Quirks
Gizmodo has a quick write-up / fix for a quirk in Time Machine. It looks like Time Machine has some issues with PC formatted disks. Basically make sure you reformat your PC disk with the new GUID partition scheme, otherwise Time Machine will choke...Labels: Apple Mac OSX Leopard, Disk Utility, GUID PArtition, Time Machine

Lining up for Leopard
Edward and I stood in line at the Lenox Square Apple Store on Friday for the premier of Leopard. I'd say by 6pm EDT there was approximately 300-400 people in line. It's always interesting to see how Apple fans would queue up for such an event -- nobody lined up to grab a copy of Vista! Store employees were nice enough to hand out bottled water to folks and inform everyone how to proceed into the store.Here are some photos taken with my iPhone.

Another stellar quarter for Apple
We are fans of Apple products here at the company, in case you haven't noticed. We work with Windows and Unix platforms, too, but Macs have a special place in our work (and life). We didn't jump on the bandwagon, however, as it took years of working in IT to appreciate the simplicity of Macs. Plug-and-play, not plug-and-pray. It just works.So it comes as no surprise that Apple announced another profitable quarter -- $904 million richer. Macs, iPods, and iPhones all sold very well, and Apple continues to increase its PC market share.
What's the secret? Create great products, and people will buy 'em.
As more people become Mac users, Jambo Consulting is well positioned to help along the way. Each year we've seen more and more small businesses take the leap into using Macs, and no one has regretted making that decision.

HTML code for Service Mark symbol
The other day I was looking for the HTML code for service mark (SM). I knew "™" is for ™, "©" is for ©, and "®" is for ®. So I thought there must be one for service mark. I googled for a while, but it appeared to be that there is no special HTML code for SM.As a workaround, I used the subscript tag () to raise "SM" next to the service name (i.e. ServiceNameSM). However, the font size for "SM" was a little too big, so I used a style to fix it:
ServiceNameSM
HTML for the style:
<style type="text/css">
.sm {
vertical-align: text-top;
font-size: 60%;
}
</style>
ServiceName<span class="sm">SM</span>

My iPhone, my digital hub
Can you believe we haven't mentioned the iPhone since it went on sale in June? iPhone mania was everywhere, starting with folks spending the night in front of Apple Stores, and now with the controversy about iPhone hacking (to run 3rd party software).Both Edward and I were present at the keynote where Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone in front of the world, and believe me, it was probably one of the most exciting Apple moments in my lifetime. Since then, like many others, I started counting down the days of the iPhone sale date.
But no, I wasn't an early adopter of the iPhone. In my opinion it was priced too high. My phone was the Nokia E61, a Symbian smartphone that had all the bells and whistles to keep my life in order. It had a full QWERTY thumb keyboard so I can type those important emails and IMs. It was a very business-y phone.
Yet that $599 shiny thinness was like no other phone in the market. Then it became $399 and I was sold. The fact that I was already a AT&T Wireless customer made the decision a bit easier. The next day after the price drop was announced, I stopped by a local Apple Store and handed over my credit card with a mental note to sell my iPod Video 30GB and Nokia E61 on eBay ASAP.
Despite its deficiencies (yes, there are several), there is no doubt that Apple had hit another home run with the iPhone. It is beautifully designed, and with a OS X soul, the user experience is unlike anything. Think back to when you FIRST encountered/used an Apple product... Remember that feeling? (The Newton PDA for me.)
So now instead of keeping three devices (phone, iPod, digital camera), I just have an iPhone. Sometimes it even replaces my laptop as the Web browsing machine, thanks to MobileSafari (none of that crappy WAP). With the latest firmware update, even iTunes is available on the iPhone to spend more money on the go.
Steve Jobs wanted the Mac to be my digital hub. I'm sure he doesn't mind the iPhone being my digital hub.
