Quick Schedule for XP Drive Defrag

The standard way to set a defrag schedule is to use the Task Scheduler in the Control Panel: How to Automate Disk Defragmenter Using Task Scheduler Tool in Windows XP

Here is my preferred way of doing it, which is much quicker. Open the command line by going to Start Menu > Run > type "cmd". Then enter the following command:
at 12:00 /every:M,W,F defrag c:

This will defrag the c: drive at noon every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Double check the scheduled task by entering this into the command prompt:
at

You can also goto Control Panel > Scheduled Tasks to check the defrag schedule.

Rumors: Analyst Hot for Apple Netbook at Macworld

Mmm... I guess the yearly MacWorld prediction season has started. So far it's been kind of tame, a refreshed Mac Mini and this Apple Netbook rumor.

There seems to be relatively low expectations at this years Macworld, which also could set Apple up for a BIG surprise.

Best Of 2008: Most Popular Free Windows Downloads of 2008

Here's a great list of Free software on Windows. A lot of these I haven't heard of before, but do look quite useful. For example, the PDF to Word Doc converter looks quite useful.

I do use CCleaner and AVG a lot on client computers. But my personal favorite has to be DropBox.

Taiwan iPhone 3Gs Are SIM Unlocked Out-of-the-Box

Nice! I might have to pickup an unlocked iPhone in Taiwan :)

Now that the iPhone is on sale in Hong Kong and Taiwan unlocked, it shouldn't be long before it goes on sale in China. And even if it doesn't, I'm sure Apple won't lose much sleep over it since all those unlocked phones will easily flow into iPhone buyers across China. With China and Taiwan having just started direct flights, this effectively becomes Apple's proxy to the China market.

gOS, a good OS

Thanks to Parallels Desktop, I'm able to install a gOS virtual machine within my MacBook Air just to try it out. gOS was the operating system of choice when Walmart sold a cheap laptop for the masses. Some say it's the "Google OS" because its applications and services are closely tied to Google. In reality, it is still a Linux OS, but bundled with a bunch of Google widgets.

It is considered a lightweight Linux distro, perfect for the trendy "netbooks" such as the Asus EEE and Acer Aspire. For gOS to even be remotely useful, it'd need a stable and reliable connection to the Internet so that it can access all the Google services and Web applications. For the everyday user, it is sufficient. Firefox, Skype, Pidgin IM client, OpenOffice, GIMP, etc. are all available to the user upon gOS installation.

If you have an old x86 system gathering dust, consider giving it new life with a lightweight Linux such as gOS, provided the system has networking capability.

Slingplayer Mac Update Offers Improved Streaming Video Quality, Online IDs, Aspect Ratio Toggling

Awesome, I love SlingBox. However, I've noticed that the Mac version of SlingPlayer has some streaming issues. The streams would always start out great start slowing down. This didn't seem to be a problem at all with the Windows versions on much lesser hardware.

Hopefully, this SlingPlayer 1.0.7 will really improve the issues.

Test driving Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac

I was pretty excited about Parallels announcing the new Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac. After the day "Hell froze over," i.e. Macs switching to Intel chips, one thing on many Mac users' minds was running Windows on these beautiful machines. The race was on, and most people had bet on virtualization powerhouse VMWare to come out with the first product.

Parallels, an obscure software firm with ties to Eastern Europe, jumped onto the scene with Parallels Desktop for Mac, beating everyone else to Windows virtualization on a Mac. Its product offered a preferred alternative to Apple's Boot Camp.

I've been using Parallels 3.0 extensively since its release, on a MacBook and MacBook Air loaded with a Windows XP virtual machine (VM). It runs well, but I wouldn't call it fast. With version 4.0, it definitely feels snappier. Coherent Mode is also improved, and a new Modality Mode is added.

Version 4.0 will require the old VMs to be converted. Luckily, 4.0 comes with a smooth utility to do it, including making a backup of VMs so that one may go back to a previous version of Parallels Desktop. Skipping the backup step is not recommended. It'll take plenty of time and drive space to complete, but be patient. Because of my limited drive space I backed up the old VMs to an external drive instead. That works too.

Overall I am quite pleased with Parallels Desktop 4.0's performance. The Parallels team definitely has a solid product to compete with industry goliath VMWare. Besides, I like to "think different."
